the history
After making a few Kinky Roots I began to get curious about the age of the tree roots. There were no trees, only roots. They had been preserved in peat. I googled ‘how to age tree roots’ !! and was immersed in the wonderful world of Dendrochronology.
Kinky Roots engaged the services of the world's largest radiocarbon dating laboratory Beta Analytic Ltd to scientifically age the roots. In Dendrochronology 1950 is treated as Year 0. 'Before Present' means before the year 1950; from which to measure the radiocarbon age. The use of thermo-nuclear weapons, post 1950, created enormous amounts of radiocarbon and irreversibly affected the capacity to age materials.
The Dendrochronology Report aged the roots at between 3840 and 4090 years old (Before Present)*. They are roughly 4000 years old. Once I realised the age of the Kinky Roots, I knew the preciousness of them – there are quite simply ancient – you are owning a piece of history. And each one is unique.
